About Buxton Markets CIC

A variety of stallsAfter many years of gradual decline of Buxton’s traditional market, High Peak Borough Council launched a competitive tender process in 2014, seeking an independent operator for all the markets in the High Peak.

Buxton Town Team applied to take on the Buxton market, operating on Tuesday and Saturday on the Market Place.  The bid promised to set up a new community company to revitalise the market, support local businesses and create an attractive retail offer for Buxton residents and visitors. In August 2015 the Council accepted the Town team’s bid and offered a 5 year contract.

Buxton Markets CIC was established on 18th December 2015 to rebuild and operate markets in Buxton. The company was set up to be owned by and run for the benefit of the community. You can have a say in how things are organised by becoming a member – you can join as an individual using this form or as an organisation.

Buxton Markets CIC’s contract to operate the markets in Market Place runs from 26th April 2016 for 5 years with an option for the Council to extend the contract for another 5 years.

The Buxton Markets Community Interest Statement spells out exactly what the new company aims to achieve, and the benefit we aim to deliver. There’s also more information in the Business Plan produced by Buxton Town Team in 2014 which still sets out the main ideas behind our plan for the markets.  We have made some changes to the timings and financial projections which you can see in our updated Projected Cashflow.
